Message for High School Teachers

Subject: Meet-a-Scientist Program

Would you like a working scientist or engineer to visit your class or club to discuss what it's like to make a discovery, what it takes to become a scientist or engineer, and how his/her research fits into their field of study? We have OSU scientists, both faculty and graduate students, who are interested in visiting Columbus area high schools to discuss their area of expertise and the importance of science in our world, and to encourage students to consider a career in science or engineering.

Presentation options are flexible. Some schools have mentioned presenting to AP students after AP testing is complete. Other teachers have indicated that scheduling to align with a particular content area being covered would be ideal (e.g. a molecular geneticist speaker during a genetics unit).

Possible presentation formats include speaking to:

  • individual classes
  • large groups of science students in an assembly format
  • small groups of students in science or engineering related clubs

While these are the ideas that have been suggested, if you have specific requests for your school and students, we are more than willing to be flexible in format and content.

If you would like to set up a presentation or discussion with a working scientist or engineer, please send our Secretary, Mark Peeples (peeples.15@osu.edu), the type of professional you are interested in and an approximate (or specific) date and time. We will do our best to find a scientist or engineer who matches your description from our list and put you in touch.

Our goal is to spread excitement about science and engineering as well as raise awareness about the potential career opportunities available to your students. Feel free to forward this to others. Thanks for joining me as we work to grow future scientists and engineers.

Sincerely,
Clark Larsen, Ph.D.

Message for All Ohio State Science and Engineering Faculty

Subject: Meet-a-Scientist Program

As an outreach to the central Ohio community, we are offering to connect high school teachers with scientists or engineers who want to share their experiences and excitement with your students. Our goal is to both get students excited about the sciences and to let them know about the range of career opportunities that are available in science and engineering fields.

If you are interested in talking to high school students about science/engineering as a profession, please send email to our Secretary, Mark Peeples (peeples.15@osu.edu), with your area of expertise, and we'll try to match you up with a high school class or club.

We'll also send you some suggestions on how to approach this daunting task - talking science to non-scientists. We will also work with the teachers to provide you with an outline or list of topics they would like their students to hear about.

Sincerely,
Clark Larsen, Ph.D.
